1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. 2 Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.
3 And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. (Genesis 1:1-3) NIV
As I write these words I have no idea what you’re facing today. I surely know my own battles, but I’d be liar to pretend to fully understand what you are going through. What I do know is that in Genesis 1:1, everything was perfect: the word “created” implies that everything was in order; in a perfect state. Theologians argue that there are millions of years separating versus 1 and 2. However, by verse two in the book of Genesis, we see a mess. Genesis 1:2 gives us three very powerful words: formless, empty and darkness. The word “formless” means: “lacking a clear shape or structure; lacking apparent organization or structure.” The word “empty” means: “Not containing or holding anything.” And the word “Darkness” means: “The lack of light.”
You may be in a situation where there is no clear structure and nothing seems organized in your life. You may be in a place of emptiness as it seems that there is a lack of purpose. To make matters worse, you may find yourself in a place of darkness without a clear vision. Get ready because you are about to have a Genesis 1:3 experience as God is about to declare in your life: “Let there be light!” No matter the magnitude of your tribulations, there will be light because God says so. Even now, beloved, in the mix of your formless, empty and dark situation; don’t forget that the Holy Spirit is hovering over it…you are not alone!
