Unmasking the Ancient Ways of Satan Part 5

1Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. 2 After fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry. 3 The tempter came to him and said, “If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread.”

4 Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.”

5 Then the devil took him to the holy city and had him stand on the highest point of the temple. 6If you are the Son of God,” he said, “throw yourself down. For it is written:

“‘He will command his angels concerning you,
and they will lift you up in their hands,
so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.”

7 Jesus answered him, “It is also written: ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.”

8 Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor. 9 “All this I will give you,” he said, “if you will bow down and worship me.

10 Jesus said to him, “Away from me, Satan! For it is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only.”

11 Then the devil left him, and angels came and attended him.”  Matthew 4:1-11 (NIV) 2010

III.           The Devil Will Attack Our Identity

If you are the Son of God,”

The Devil knew exactly who Jesus was; no doubt in my mind that back in the days when he was Lucifer, he knew Jesus, personally. However, as the Devil makes his entrance to officially start his attacks and temptations, he attempts to place doubt in Jesus’ mind concerning the Lord’s identity as the Son of God. But, do you guys remember what the Father told Jesus after Jesus was baptized by John the Baptist? In Matthew 3:16-17 we read:

16 As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting on him. 17 And a voice from heaven said, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.”

See, it was necessary for this event to take place as Jesus was entering the desert. We, the people of God, must, without any doubt, be convinced that we are children of God and that He loves us. With these assurance in mind, Jesus entered the desert and was prepared to face-up not only this, but all of the temptations that Satan threw at Him. Many of us are walking around not knowing who we are in Christ and the devil is constantly attacking us and having a field-day with our emotions. Many of us are so full of insecurities that our faith is unable to shine through. Arise people of God, we are God’s children…let nobody and no circumstances that you may be facing take your identity in Christ away. Yes, you have issues, just like me, but that is between you and your Father…Your flesh will never voluntarily submit to God’s will, but in the inside of you there is an “Inner Most Man” that is always willing and that is the one that truly loves God; that is the New Creation in you and in me. Your identity is not in what you have or in what you don’t, but in Christ Jesus our Lord. The Devil is a liar!
