“ 3 ‘If you follow my decrees and are careful to obey my commands, 4 I will send you rain in its season, and the ground will yield its crops and the trees their fruit. 5 Your threshing will continue until grape harvest and the grape harvest will continue until planting, and you will eat all the food you want and live in safety in your land. 6 “‘I will grant peace in the land, and you will lie down and no one will make you afraid. I will remove wild beasts from the land, and the sword will not pass through your country. 7 You will pursue your enemies, and they will fall by the sword before you. 8 Five of you will chase a hundred, and a hundred of you will chase ten thousand, and your enemies will fall by the sword before you.
9 “‘I will look on you with favor and make you fruitful and increase your numbers, and I will keep my covenant with you. 10 You will still be eating last year’s harvest when you will have to move it out to make room for the new. 11 I will put my dwelling place among you, and I will not abhor you. 12 I will walk among you and be your God, and you will be my people. 13 I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of Egypt so that you would no longer be slaves to the Egyptians; I broke the bars of your yoke and enabled you to walk with heads held high.” (Leviticus 26:3-13) (NIV)
Leviticus 26 shows us the only two paths available for mankind. Those paths are as real today as they were then. The list of the consequences for obeying God is short, sweet and very powerful. The list for disobeying God is long and horrifying. It makes you wonder why so many of us rather disobey God and go after evil. Evil has a way of presenting itself in such an appealing way, but will always leave us empty, destroyed and with the smell of death all around us. In the book of Deuteronomy 30:19 God once again reminded us of these two paths and made a statement that it still at the heart of the human condition; it is indeed our choice!
“19 This day I call the heavens and the earth as witnesses against you that I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Now choose life…”
I am not advocating for us to ignore the political system all together, politics does affect us. However, it amazes me how much emphasis and hope we place in our political system, the government and our certain party as the way of change for the better. In the process, we continue to ignore God, his way of life, holiness and His power to bring forth all that we need and more. In the process of placing our trust in manmade institutions and the idols of this day, we look more and more like a nation that is suffering the consequences of disobedience and less and less like a nation that is under God.
God and only God can cause nature to cooperate with us; to bring us the rain that is needed and to cause the fruit of our labor to multiply beyond what science can do. God is the answer in our war against terrorism; God can grant us peace and supernatural victories in times of war; God can surely take away our fears and make us a people that walk with assurance and trust in God as He removes the beasts of crime, injustice and violence away from our land. God is indeed the only answer!
