“The angel of the LORD came and sat down under the oak in Ophrah that belonged to Joashthe Abiezrite, where his son Gideon was threshing wheat in a winepress to keep it from the Midianites. 12 When the angel of the LORD appeared to Gideon, he said, “The LORD is with you, mighty warrior.” (Judges 6:11-12)
The children of Israel were at their worst; the Midianites were literally terrorizing them by taking everything from them; food, clothing, treasures and more. The Midianites were serving themselves as they became pleased while the prosperity of Israel kept shunning.
In the midst of these horrible times, a man named Gideon is introduced into the Biblical history of Israel. The Bible tells us that at the time, the Angel of the Lord came to speak to Gideon as he was separating seeds from the wheat in a winepress to keep it from the Midianites. The first thing that got my attention was that Gideon was using a valuable winepress for something outside of its original purpose. The persecution was so, bad that Israel was forced to use created ways just to be able to survive.
The image of Gideon, so far, is not the one of a mighty warrior, but of a man who is just like everybody else; oppressed and afraid of the enemy. As a matter of fact, Gideon said in Judges 6:15 “But Lord,’ Gideon asked, ‘how can I save Israel? My clan is the weakest in Manasseh, and I am the least in my family.” Not a pretty picture! However, in all, God has a way of looking at us that goes beyond any other. If you are arrogant, God has a way to bring you down for your own good and then lift you up for His glory. But if you are like Gideon and in his circumstances, God has a way of filling you with His Spirit and using you in a way that will be forever remembered.
I don’t know what you are facing today and what you’ve done to be in whatever situation you find yourself in; but if your self-esteem is low, if you find yourself with no purpose, you should ask yourself: Do you know how God sees you?
