Everywhere we look we see disunity! Not only are the Baptists not walking in unity with the Pentecostals, but also within denominations and local churches there is plenty of disunity. Beloved, we must confront ourselves with our own mess, false interpretations of Scripture, and laziness in the study of GOD’S Word. If it is in the WORD is essential! Revelation 22:18-19 gives us a very serious warning:
“18 For I testify to everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this book: If anyone adds to these things, God will add to him the plagues that are written in this book; 19 and if anyone takes away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part from the Book of Life, from the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book.” NKJV
So what I am discussing here is what is really essential for the unity of the Body of Christ? We must make it very clear that unity is not just a few, so call Christian folks, coming together under the umbrella of just learning to agree to disagree. Ephesians 4:1-5 gives us true Biblical insight on what Unity in the Church should be all about and the only way to achieve such:
“I, therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you to walk worthy of the calling with which you were called, 2 with all lowliness and gentleness, with longsuffering, bearing with one another in love, 3 endeavoring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. 4 There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called in one hope of your calling; 5 one Lord, one faith, one baptism; 6 one God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all.” Ephesians 4:1-5 NKJV
God tells us in Ephesians 4:3 that He desires for us to be united in the SPIRIT. If the Spirit is not in it, we will stand divided; without the Spirit we have no unity…it becomes IMPOSSIBLE! That is indeed the problem; much of what we are doing in our churches today is not of the Spirit. Our disunity is evidence of the lack of Spirituality! The Bible tells us in First John 2:27,
“But you have received the Holy Spirit, and he lives within you, so you don’t need anyone to teach you what is true. For the Spirit teaches you everything you need to know, and what he teaches is true–it is not a lie. So just as he has taught you, remain in fellowship with Christ.” NIV
I will never take away from the Biblical fact that we have teachers called by God to teach; teaching is indeed a precious gift. However, the Holy Spirit must be our number one teacher. What an amazing gift we have in the Holy Ghost! Lately, I have seen many brothers and sisters that have been infected by denominational belief systems that are not scriptural, but because the Holy Ghost dwells in them, I see many recognizing that there is more. Some are lazy and don’t care much. Some are brave enough to go after all that God has for them and still others are too afraid to do so and are dying without ever taking a peek at the promise land.
That is the issue I have with emphasizing so much in denominations. Denominations have caused and continue to cause devastating damages. We have become so busy being Pentecostals, Baptists, Presbyterians, etc. that we have moved away from the SPIRIT who is the only One that can truly teach us the mysteries and deep subjects of God. Beloved, may we be united in the Spirit and never united in lies, compromises, or the taking and adding from God’s Word. May we stop focusing on what the world does and may we start working towards the unity of the Spirit by spending time with Him who is the only One that can bring us together.
