On September 3, 1992 I started working with Teenage boys in the Foster Care System in Jacksonville Youth Sanctuary. At the time I was 24 years old. I worked at JYS for exactly eight years and eight months. That was the start of my career in human services.
In May of 2000 I started actively working in ministry as an Assistant Minister. A year or so later as I continued minister in different capacities, I started my own 501 (c) (3) as I founded Good Fight Ministries, a non for profit martial arts program.
In 2006 I worked as a Social Worker in Gates County North Carolina and later, at The Jacksonville Urban League, I worked as a Family Development Liaison. In both of these jobs I was able to see another side of the human services field.
My heart has always being to help people. I need to wake up in the morning knowing that God is using me to make a difference in somebody’s life. I don’t consider myself too smart or too bright so I need passion to function. However, those jobs opened my eyes to the damaging monster that dependency in the government is causing on people.
For the most part, if we are honest and leave politics aside, this dependency does not work. The Bible tells us in Jeremiah 17:5-8,
5 Thus says the Lord:
“Cursed is the man who trusts in man And makes flesh his strength, Whose heart departs from the Lord.
6 For he shall be like a shrub in the desert, And shall not see when good comes, But shall inhabit the parched places in the wilderness, In a salt land which is not inhabited.
7 “Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, And whose hope is the Lord.
8 For he shall be like a tree planted by the waters, Which spreads out its roots by the river, And will not fear when heat comes; But its leaf will be green, And will not be anxious in the year of drought, Nor will cease from yielding fruit. (NKJV)
Can you see the difference between the man that trust God and the one who trust man (Government)? These social programs are connected to power; the politicians give these programs to the people and the people vote for them. Politicians take these programs away and politicians lose their jobs…it is that simple!
As a Social Worker we basically worked with the poor with the goal of helping our clients come out of poverty. I found out very quickly how hard that task is. It is hard to compete with Food Stamps, Medicaid, Session 8, Head Start and all of the government goodies out there.
On the one hand we have the government using every penny with the motto “use it or lose it” as it refers to money and, on the other, we have many able bodies doing absolutely nothing for the betterment of society.
In my opinion, and let me make this clear, our society must make sure that our hard working elders are taking care of with the best services, medicine, etc. Also, our society must make sure that our wounded veterans that come home after fighting for our freedom are taken care of as a token of our appreciation for their service. We also have a community of true disable men, women and children that we must not leave behind. Outside of these examples I am giving you, every able body out there should be working if he/she desires to eat. That is what the Bible tells us in 2 Thessalonians 3:10-12
10 For even when we were with you, we commanded you this: If anyone will not work, neither shall he eat. 11 For we hear that there are some who walk among you in a disorderly manner, not working at all, but are busybodies. 12 Now those who are such we command and exhort through our Lord Jesus Christ that they work in quietness and eat their own bread. (NKJV)
Dependency in the government did not work, is not working and, it will never work. The statistics are there to confirm that these programs are unable to do what they were created to do. In the corporate world most of these program would have been out of bussiness by now.
People making their own living is not a political idea; it is a God idea. God demands the dignity of people making their own living. What we need is dependency in God, not in the government.
This dependency in government is destroying this country; it is dressed in compassion, but it is a demon dressed as an angel of light. If you don’t have a job and you are an able body, trust me when I tell you, there is a job out there for you. It may require that you relocate, but if you trust the Lord and do what He tells you, you will not fail.
