Beyond Adam and Eve’s Disobedience
The story of Adam and Eve is well known all around the world. We know that there was a tree of the knowledge of good and evil. We know that Adam and Eve were instructed by God not to eat from it. Genesis 3 is the beginning of three demonic attacks against God’s creation. Many consequences followed after Adam and Eve ate the forbidden fruit. At the top of those consequences were 1) they were kicked out of Eden and 2) death was introduce into humanity.
Notice that this attack was initiated by a supernatural being in the form of a serpent. According to Revelation 20:2 that is the adversary who we typically identify as the devil. But this celestial attacks against God’s creation did not stop there; it actually got worse.
Now, before we continue, let me ask you two questions; how much of the supernatural are you willing to believe? And, do you really believe the Bible or, are you stuck in the box of your denomination? I am asking these questions because things are about to get really weird. The second celestial attack against God’s creation took place in Genesis 6:1-7,
Now it came about, when men began to multiply on the face of the land, and daughters were born to them, 2 that the sons of God saw that the daughters of men were beautiful; and they took wives for themselves, whomever they chose. 3 Then the Lord said, “My Spirit shall not strive with man forever, because he also is flesh; nevertheless his days shall be one hundred and twenty years.” 4 The Nephilim were on the earth in those days, and also afterward, when the sons of God came in to the daughters of men, and they bore children to them. Those were the mighty men who were of old, men of renown.
5 Then the Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great on the earth, and that every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.6 The Lord was sorry that He had made man on the earth, and He was grieved in His heart. 7 The Lord said, “I will blot out man whom I have created from the face of the land, from man to animals to creeping things and to birds of the sky; for I am sorry that I have made them.”
In verse 11 God describes the condition of the human race at that time; “Now the earth was corrupt in the sight of God, and the earth was filled with violence. 12 God looked on the earth, and behold, it was corrupt; for all flesh had corrupted their way upon the earth.” (NASB 1995)
The word corrupt tells the whole story; that is the Hebrew word, šāḥaṯ: meaning “To spoil, to ruin, to destroy, to pervert, to corrupt, to become corrupt. Fallen angels had sex with women and out of that union came the Nephilim or giants. This is actually confirmed in the New Testament by Jude and Peter. As you read through the Israel’s biblical story, you will discover that they fought these giants.
What was the immediate consequence for this terrible transgression? The Flood! God destroyed a great deal of his creation and started all over again with Noah, his wife, his three sons and three daughters in law. God pressed the reset bottom. But the evil attacks against God’s creation will suffer one more severe attack.
I will address the third attack on God’s creation as I answer the question, are there other gods in the Bible? Don’t worry, it will make sense!
