During the weeks and months leading to the 2020 Presidential election and, during the weeks and months after the election, I heard many people speak about God’s Covenant with the USA. Without engaging in any serious study, I knew that covenant does not exist. I actually consider expressions such “American exceptionalism” and this covenant talk, as very arrogant. Is simply not biblical. Let’s explore where this idea comes from. Everything started with our first President, George Washington,

Then Washington made a covenant with the God of the universe saying: “Since we ought to be no less persuaded that the propitious smiles of Heaven, can never be expected on a nation that disregards the eternal rules of order and right, which Heaven itself has ordained: And since the preservation of the sacred fire of liberty, and the destiny of the Republican model of Government, are justly considered as deeply, perhaps as finally staked, on the experiment entrusted to the hands of the American people.” In his address Washington made it clear that no nation can expect to be blessed by God (propitious smiles of Heaven) if they turn away from Him. (disregards the eternal rules of order and right) If a nation forgets God, she will lose the blessing that God has given her. Representing the nation, Washington made a promise that the United States of America would follow God. If she ever broke her promise, then she would lose God’s blessing and protection. God would keep His promise. He always kept His promises. Only one question remained: Would the United States of America keep hers?[1]

I do appreciate Washington’s acknowledgment of God, and no doubt that America has been bless by God. I love this nation; this nation has been good to me and my family. I do believe that there are great opportunities in America… no doubt! However, we need to address this topic biblically.

This is not a covenant; this is simply George Washington acknowledging God and, stating truth regarding what happens when we walk away from God. However, there is nothing here establishing that God has a Covenant with America. God has made his covenants very clear in the Bible. Even as, perhaps, economically, the USA is at the center of the world, spiritually speaking, they are not; only one nation is, Israel.

In Genesis 10 God gives us the table of nations. God placed other inferior gods over those nations. In Genesis 11 we see the sin of the Tower of Babel. This was the world betraying God and selling out to other gods. The gods that Jehovah put in charge of these nations joined Satan in their betrayal. Moses explained this in a song he shared with the people of Israel shortly before his death,

Remember the days of old;
    consider the years of many generations;
ask your father, and he will show you,
    your elders, and they will tell you.
When the Most High gave to the nations their inheritance,
    when he divided mankind,
he fixed the borders of the peoples
    according to the number of the sons of God
But the Lord's portion is his people,
    Jacob his allotted heritage.
10 “He found him in a desert land,
    and in the howling waste of the wilderness;
he encircled him, he cared for him,
    he kept him as the apple of his eye.
11 Like an eagle that stirs up its nest,
    that flutters over its young,
spreading out its wings, catching them,
    bearing them on its pinions,
12 the Lord alone guided him,
    no foreign god was with him.
Deuteronomy 32:7-12 (ESV)

The rest of the world, outside of Israel, is the secular world; the world that rejects God. Every nation in the world has its roots in those 70 nations in Genesis 10. In a time when the whole world turned his back on God (Genesis 11); God made a Covenant with Abraham (Genesis 12).

Some Bible translations mistranslate Deuteronomy 32:8 as they say, “When the Most High divided to the nations their inheritance, when he separated the sons of Adam, he set the bounds of the people according to the number of the children of Israel.” (KJV) This is a horrible translation! When God divided the world in nations; Israel was not around. As stated before, God called Abraham in Genesis 12. Also, it makes no sense that God divided the nation according the children of Israel. Israel’s borders were established later. If you know anything about the Bible, you will also know that Israel needed to fight for their promise land. The promise land was occupied by other nations. The right translation is the sons of God, same expression used in Genesis 6 referring to divine beings.

The betrayal of these gods in charge of these nations is well documented in Psalm 82 as we look at the prayer of Asaph,

God has taken his place in the divine council;
    in the midst of the gods he holds judgment:
“How long will you judge unjustly
    and show partiality to the wicked? Selah
Give justice to the weak and the fatherless;
    maintain the right of the afflicted and the destitute.
Rescue the weak and the needy;
    deliver them from the hand of the wicked.”
They have neither knowledge nor understanding,
    they walk about in darkness;
    all the foundations of the earth are shaken.

Asaph is describing the condition of the world under the rulership of these gods. The world is filled with wickedness, fatherless children, affliction, destitution, no knowledge or understanding of God’s ways and spiritual darkness. This is the way you can describe the end-result of secularism, even today. You can summarize everything in one word: Godlessness! And then God responded,

I said, “You are gods,
    sons of the Most High, all of you;
nevertheless, like men you shall die,
    and fall like any prince.”

Again, Jehovah let us know that these gods are real. He describes them as sons of the Most High. However, God tells them that they will die like men. Asaph complete his prayer by stating,

Arise, O God, judge the earth;
    for you shall inherit all the nations!

God’s heart is to save the world, but never through political agendas. In the Old Testament Israel was the light of the world. That is why when God made a covenant with Abraham, he stated the following,

Now the Lord said to Abram, “Go from your country and your kindred and your father's house to the land that I will show you. And I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you and make your name great, so that you will be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, and him who dishonors you I will curse, and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.” Genesis 12:1-3 (ESV)

In Genesis 22:17-18 God tells Abraham,

I will surely bless you, and I will surely multiply your offspring as the stars of heaven and as the sand that is on the seashore. And your offspring shall possess the gate of his enemies, 18 and in your offspring shall all the nations of the earth be blessed, because you have obeyed my voice.” (ESV)

Notice that In Genesis 12:3 God tells Abraham that in him all the families of the earth shall be bless. In Genesis 22:18 God says that in Abraham’s offspring all of the nations of the earth be blessed. Israel is at the center of this earth, not the USA… Sorry!

Now, we know that Israel ended up betraying God also. This is where is important to understand God’s Covenant with humanity. Covenants were initiated by God. This is important because if is not because of those covenants we do not have a chance; God knows that we will all mess up.

See, the divine beings that betrayed God did not have a covenant with God, the nations of the world outside of Israel do not have a covenant with God either. There is no forgiveness of sin for those divine beings and, there is no forgiveness of sin outside of Christ, outside of HIS elect. That is why God has not forgotten about Israel. God will restore Israel (Romans 11:26) why? It is not because of Israel’s perfection, but because God’s mercy manifested in his covenants.

God those love the world and he love us gentiles (non-Jewish folks). God is saving people out of the wicket nations of the world and into His family. This time through Jesus Christ. The Covenant now is with the Church. The focus should never be the USA or any other nation; the focus should be Jesus Christ; through HIM we are saved. For two thousand years folks have been saved by God from all over the world; but the secular work has not change and will never change; Satan is the god of this world.[2] The Apostle Paul describes Satan’s evil government very well when he states,

For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. Ephesians 6:12 (ESV)

We can say that on this earth we have two worlds; one belongs to the devil (The secular world) and, the other belongs to God (The Church/Born Again Believers / Israel). This is where the struggle is. For more on this nonbiblical teaching of the Unites States having a special covenant with God lets read what the Prophet Zacharia has to say,

The oracle of the word of the Lord concerning Israel: Thus declares the Lord, who stretched out the heavens and founded the earth and formed the spirit of man within him: “Behold, I am about to make Jerusalem a cup of staggering to all the surrounding peoples. The siege of Jerusalem will also be against Judah. On that day I will make Jerusalem a heavy stone for all the peoples. All who lift it will surely hurt themselves. And all the nations of the earth will gather against itOn that day, declares the Lord, I will strike every horse with panic, and its rider with madness. But for the sake of the house of Judah I will keep my eyes open, when I strike every horse of the peoples with blindness. Then the clans of Judah shall say to themselves, ‘The inhabitants of Jerusalem have strength through the Lord of hosts, their God.’
“On that day I will make the clans of Judah like a blazing pot in the midst of wood, like a flaming torch among sheaves. And they shall devour to the right and to the left all the surrounding peoples, while Jerusalem shall again be inhabited in its place, in Jerusalem.
“And the Lord will give salvation to the tents of Judah first, that the glory of the house of David and the glory of the inhabitants of Jerusalem may not surpass that of Judah. On that day the Lord will protect the inhabitants of Jerusalem, so that the feeblest among them on that day shall be like David, and the house of David shall be like God, like the angel of the Lord, going before them. And on that day I will seek to destroy all the nations that come against Jerusalem. Zachariah 12:1-9 (ESV)

Can you see? All of the nations will be gathered against God’s people; that is, including, the USA. In Conclusion, in the Old Testament God’s blessing was manifest through Israel; they were the light of the world. In the New Testament God has not forgotten about Israel (Romans 1:16). All of the covenants that God self-imposed with Israel are still valid today. However, the light of the world is now the church (Matthew 5:14). Through the Gospel of Jesus Christ God is reaching out to the nations of the world, not through liberalism, not through conservatism, Trump or Biden. Beloved, that is the Great Commission and, we are a part of that mission of rescuing the world from Satan and the rebellious gods,

And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.” Matthew 28:18-20 (ESV)
