To understand what God has to say about homosexuality according to the New Testament go no further than Romans 1:18-32. Paul starts by stating
The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of people, who suppress the truth by their wickedness, Romans 1:18 (NIV)
Understand that the idea that God is cool with sin is designed for folks to continue sinning. “God is love”, they said. “God is merciful” they add; and even as these qualities are completely true; it does not tell the whole story about the character of God and how He deals with sin.
The reality is that there is a wrath that God has against godlessness and against the wickedness of people. This godlessness here has another ingredient that can’t be ignored… these folks are not only ungodly, but they are guilty of actively suppressing the truth. See, you can be a drug addict, and, without a doubt, you are sinning and destroying your life; but the drug dealer is in another category; he destroys, not only his life, but the life of others. In Romans 1:19-20 Paul makes some very powerful statements when he states,
since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them. 20 For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse. (NIV)
According to these verses, atheism does not exist. Now, what you have is people who hate God and who do not agree with Him and have no intentions of submitting to Him. However, God states that he has made his existence plain or obvious. The problem is that “…although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened.” Romans 1:21 (NIV) Notice what is happening to their minds and to their hearts as they suppress the truth:
- Their mind becomes futile: Futile is the Greek word mataióō; meaning: “To make vain or worthless, to cancel out…. destitute of real wisdom (Rom. 1:21), to be or act perversely, foolish. In reality, to get off the right path.”[1] Ever wonder where the Cancel Culture comes from? It is the direct result of a mataióō mind.
- Their hearts became foolish and darkened: Foolish in the original language means “Without insight or understanding.”[2] The word Darkened in the original language means, “Deprive of light. Figuratively of moral darkness, ignorance (Rom. 1:21; 11:10 quoted from Ps. 69:23; Eph. 4:18). See skotía (4653), darkness as the consequence of sin.”[3]
This form of wrath of God is very simple, God let those suppressors of the truth go as far as they want to go in their depravity. He let them do with their lives whatever they want to do. You and I are not perfect, but if God releases this wrath on us, we will doing some despicable things ourselves. See, the Bible tells us that “…theLord disciplines the one he loves, and he chastens everyone he accepts as his son.” Hebrews 12:6 (NIV)
If we are not worse is because of God. But this wrath is reserve for these suppressors of the truth. Romans 1:24-32 makes this point very clear for us,
Therefore God gave them over in the sinful desires of their hearts to sexual impurity for the degrading of their bodies with one another. 25 They exchanged the truth about God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator—who is forever praised. Amen. 26 Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural sexual relations for unnatural ones. 27 In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed shameful acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their error. 28 Furthermore, just as they did not think it worthwhile to retain the knowledge of God, so God gave them over to a depraved mind, so that they do what ought not to be done. 29 They have become filled with every kind of wickedness, evil, greed and depravity. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit and malice. They are gossips, 30 slanderers, God-haters, insolent, arrogant and boastful; they invent ways of doing evil; they disobey their parents; 31 they have no understanding, no fidelity, no love, no mercy.32 Although they know God’s righteous decree that those who do such things deserve death, they not only continue to do these very things but also approve of those who practice them. Romans 1:18-32 (NIV)
Some years ago, a pastor told me that Romans 1:18-32 is all about the culture of the last days; we are there now. It should not surprise anybody that the LGBTQIA seems to have been taken over our culture; but understand that they are going beyond fighting for their rights as humans; they have an agenda to fundamentally change God’s truth for a lie. Genesis 1:27 tells us that “…God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.” (NIV) Some folks misinterpret Scripture by stating that God is both male and female; but that is not what is happening here. Humans was created in God’s images. Can we not distinguish between dogs, horses, Lyons, etc.? They have their images (male or female). We as humans have our own image also.
In Genesis 2:7 God is more specific, “Then the Lord God formed a man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being.” (NIV) As it relates to the creation of the woman God states,
The Lord God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.” 19 Now the Lord God had formed out of the ground all the wild animals and all the birds in the sky. He brought them to the man to see what he would name them; and whatever the man called each living creature, that was its name. 20 So the man gave names to all the livestock, the birds in the sky and all the wild animals. But for Adam no suitable helper was found. 21 So the Lord God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep; and while he was sleeping, he took one of the man’s ribs and then closed up the place with flesh. 22 Then the Lord God made a woman from the rib he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man. 23 The man said, “This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called ‘woman,’ for she was taken out of man.”24 That is why a man leaves his father and mother and is united to his wife, and they become one flesh. Genesis 2:18-24 (NIV)
In conclusion, our Biblical response to the LGBTQIA community is not a complicated one. As believers we are called to love them. As believers we should never mistreat them, and we must acknowledge that they have rights like every other human being; but as believers we don’t celebrate sin. Homosexuality is a sin; the whole LGBTQIA movement is a sin and those who are pushing this agenda are suppressing the truth. This community will continue to gain power in our society, but it will never, ever gain the approval of God. Many believers like to dance with political correctness, but I remind you the words of the Prophet Isaiah,
Woe to those who call evil good
and good evil,
who put darkness for light
and light for darkness,
who put bitter for sweet
and sweet for bitter. Isaiah 5:20 (NIV)
Beloved, just like there is no way to make adultery, sexual abuse against children, stealing, lying, rape, etc. righteous; there is no way to make the LGBTQIA community agenda righteous before the Lord. Not everybody in the LGBTQIA is a truth suppressor; some are sincerely struggling. For those who are struggling I want to tell you that Jesus died for all our sins. He is our Savior, our Deliverer and He has the power to make restitution in our lives, to fill us with joy and peace. Repent, for the Kingdom of God is near and confess what God is already doing in your heart, confess Christ into your heart and ask Him to help you. Many have failed you, but God will never abandon you, He will never fail nor forsake you. His blood will wash your sins away!
