“Exploring Genesis 1:1-2”

As I listened to several Christian teachers, I had no choice but to rethink this gap thing. Why are secular scientists so eager to insist on an earth that is billions of years? Because the more millions we can add to the earth and man’s age, the more the story of Genesis can be discredited, and the more the story of Genesis is discredited, the more room there is for the evolution theory. Secular scientists have done a great job of making holes and planting doubt in the heart of the believer regarding the story of Genesis. They have and continue to assault our faith. They are suppressors of the truth. Romans 1:18-20 tells us,

The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of people, who suppress the truth by their wickedness, ¹⁹ since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them. ²⁰ For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse. (NIV)

If we have doubts regarding the story of Genesis our faith and trust in God will be damaged, especially in moments of trouble in our lives. It becomes impossible to trust God. Maybe this is the reason why the author of Hebrews warms us about this when he states, “By faith we understand that the universe was formed at God’s command, so that what is seen was not made out of what was visible.” Hebrews 11:3 (NIV) 

So, I asked myself this simple question, who has the power to create out of nothing? Well, only God can. There is indeed a demonic agenda against our faith in God. An attack against the creation story of Genesis is an attack against our faith. I was not able to see that God created the heavens and the earth on the same day, and in the very next verse see an earth that was formless, void, and dark. It sounded contradictory. However, Isaiah 45:18 help me understand and find answers, 

For thus says the Lord, who created the heavens (He is the God who formed the earth and made it, He established it and did not create it a waste place, but formed it to be inhabited), “I am the Lord, and there is none else. Isaiah (NASB1995)

The first day was more active than we thought; it reads this way: “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. ² The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.³ And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. ⁴ And God saw that the light was good. And God separated the light from the darkness. ⁵ God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And there was evening and there was morning, the first day.” Genesis 1:1-5 (ESV)

Beloved, God spoke the earth and the universe into existence, but He was not done. What we see, on that same day, is that God also spoke light into existence and separated the light from the darkness. This was also the introduction of the Chronos time; the 24-hour days as we know it today. There is no gap; at all! However, it was not easy to arrive at that conclusion; after all, we must deal with Satan. 

The folks in favor of the Gap tell us that the reason we see an apparent drastic change from Genesis 1:1 to Genesis 1:2 is because Satan was thrown into the earth after his rebellion. Satan and his fallen angels were indeed thrown into the earth, but we must explore when. Let’s take a look!
