26 Years Since God Saved Me

On a day like today in Jacksonville, Florida, in 1997, Jesus saved my soul. No, I did not decide to follow HIM. The Bible tells me, “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— not by works so that no one can boast.” Ephesians 2:8-9 (NIV) We cannot make such a decision and save ourselves. This miracle took place in my life by grace; I did nothing to deserve this. I was blessed on that day to believe the Gospel; my eyes were open; I was no longer blinded by the god of this work (2 Corinthians 4:4). He opened my eyes to see the reality of Jesus as the Son of God, His sinless life, his death, and resurrection.

My confession did not save me; my confession echoed what Jesus did in my heart. Praise the Living God. My spirit was born again twenty-six years ago. Jesus speaks about this new birth when He states,

Now there was a Pharisee, a man named Nicodemus who was a member of the Jewish ruling council. He came to Jesus at night and said, “Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher who has come from God. For no one could perform the signs you are doing if God were not with him.”Jesus replied, “Very truly I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again.” “How can someone be born when they are old?” Nicodemus asked. “Surely they cannot enter a second time into their mother’s womb to be born!” Jesus answered, “Very truly I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless they are born of water and the Spirit. Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit. John 3:1-6 (NIV)

This idea that it is up to us to accept Jesus is not biblical; as a matter of fact, it is very anti-biblical. He chose us, not the other way around (Romans 5:8 / Ephesians 1:4). As long as I have the brain I have right now; I will never be able to understand why God loves us so much or why He created us to start with. That theology is too overwhelming for me. But today, I am grateful and give HIM all the glory, the honor, and the praise.

From the beautiful beaches in my hometown Guánica to the Sunshine State, the country land in North Carolina, the snow and ice in Alaska, and the Arizona Wilderness, I can say… God has been faithful.
