7 Characteristics of a Church I Will and Will not Join

Today, on a beautiful Sunday morning, my wife and I woke up and, after breakfast and a few chores, we decided to engage in a formal system of searching for a local church. My wife and I moved to Arizona a year ago and, after two failed attempts to find that local church, we are still searching. We prayerfully started the process at 10:50 AM and, finished at 9:39 PM. Before we went online to watch videos of services, responses to Covid-19, worship teams, belief systems, statements of faith, church governments. etc. we went over the following characteristics to help us weed out churches and consider others for a visit.

7 Characteristics of a Church I Will not Join

  1. Any churches that claim that they are the only way to heaven: We know in part (First Corinthians 13:9) Jesus is the only way (John 14:6)
  2. Churches who preach a different gospel: (Galatians 1:8)
  3. Spirit quenching churches: (First Thessalonians 5:19)
  4. Any church whose leader is a female: (I Timothy 2:12)
  5. Any church that is currently close because of Covid-19. (Hebrews 10:25)
  6. Preachers and teachers without the authority to do so. (Matthew 7:28-29)
  7. Churches who allow women to minister in seducing clothing such as leggings, tight clothing, short shorts, short dresses, etc. (First Peter 3:3-4 / First Timothy 2:9)

7 Characteristics of a Church I Will Join

  1. A church that fully honors the Holy Spirit. (Revelation 1-3 encourages us to listen to what the Spirit is saying to the churches.)
  2. A church with anointed and talented musicians. (Psalm 33:3)
  3. A church where our gifts are welcome. (Matthew 25:14-30)
  4. A church that preaches the gospel to the lost and, teaches Sound Doctrine. (Mark 16:15 / Titus 2)
  5. A church with a spiritually mature pastor. (First Timothy 3:6)
  6. A church with a biblical government. (The Bible speaks about Apostles who appoint a Body of Elders in the local church)
  7. A church where we can develop true and meaningful relationships with other believers. (Act 2:42)

We search online for many churches in 7 different cities. We specifically search for churches withing a half an hour from our home. At the end of our church’s searching, we completed a whopping list of… 3 churches. How difficult it is to find a church family! We will be visiting these churches in the next three weeks; one every week. May the Lord help us in this journey!
