Our Soul

Now may the God of peace himself sanctify you completely, and may your whole spirit and soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. First Thessalonians 5:23 (ESV)

The soul is where we have our mind (The way we think). Is the part of us that needs to be renew according to Romans 12:2. Our will or decision-making comes from the soul and, the soul is the seat of our emotions. The way we think will directly affect our decision-making and, our decision-making will directly affect our emotions.

We must see things from the point of view of the mind of Christ (I Corinthians 2:16). If we do so, we will make the right decisions. When we make decisions according to the flesh or, according to the world, we will always make the wrong decisions. Therefore, soon, or later, our emotions will be affected as we suffer the consequences of those worldly decisions through regret, anxiety, depression, etc.

Our soul is in constant need of restoration. Psalm 23:3 tells us “He restores my soul; He guides me in the paths of righteousness For His name’s sake.” (NASB-1995) Our maturity will be reflected in our soul; that’s where the work ultimately takes place. It is no coincidence that, at the center of the ministry of elders in the church, is caring for the souls of the people they are called to serve. Hebrews 13:17 tells us,

Obey your leaders and submit to them, for they are keeping watch over your souls, as those who will have to give an account. Let them do this with joy and not with groaning, for that would be of no advantage to you. (ESV)

Historically, men always mess up in three areas primarily, 1) Sin related to sex, 2) unhealthy diets which debilitate our health and 3) bad money management. A good pastor or group of elders in a local church will watch over these areas very closely.
